GORE-TEX®, made by W.L. Gore & Associates, is a breathable membrane laminated to the fabric of any garment that needs to be waterproof and windproof, yet breathable. GORE-TEX products are:
- 100% waterproof
- Very breathable
- Can insulate in cold temperatures
A GORE-TEX® product is created with a membrane that can release moisture vapours, whilst also preventing substances such as oil, dirt and stains, and wind or rain penetrating.
This is created with a wafer-thin expanded Polytetrafluoroethelene (ePTFE), in which each pore is 20,000 times smaller than a water droplet, yet some 700 times larger than a body moisture molecule, allowing evaported body moisture (perspiration) to escape whilst blocking the entry of rain and snow.
DryVent® is a superior, waterproof, breathable technology utilizing a polyurethane (PU) coating that consists of a tri-component multi-layer formula for waterproof protection, moisture permeability and durability. This technology has been lab tested in The North Face® Quality Assurance lab to ensure the best possible durability and function while also maintaining a comfortable level of breathability. The minimum level of breathability achieved using DryVent® is: 600 g/m²/24 hours on the Moisture Vapor Transfer Rate scale.
Unfortunately, we do not have the waterproof and breathability ratings for GORE-TEX®, however, the GORE-TEX® membrane contains over 9 billion microscopic pores per square inch. These pores are 20,000 times smaller than a water droplet, but 700 times larger than a water vapor molecule, which makes the GORE-TEX® membrane completely waterproof from the outside, while allowing perspiration to escape from the inside. Garments with the GORE-TEX® membrane are conversely measured with the G rating from 5,000 - 20,000.
The DryVent® technology has been tested in our Quality Assurance lab and is measured in PSI (pound per square inch) which is the pressure resulting from a one pound-force applied to an area of one square inch. The ratings that have resulted from this test are:
- Breathability: 700-750 g/m2/24hrs avg (MVTR) upright cup
- Waterproof rating - 75 PSI avg, 75 avg PSI after 20 launderings
GORE-TEX® Paclite®: This exclusive Paclite® membrane is laminated to lightweight, strong nylon textiles to produce garments that are extremely breathable, compressible, and durably waterproof. This membrane contains a protective black layer that is made of an ""oil-hating"" (oleophobic) polymer and carbon that allows perspiration vapor to pass through, but prohibits body oils, cosmetics, salt water, and insect repellents from altering the water proof qualities of the membrane. Extremely compressible, this fabric packs extremely small.
GORE-TEX® Performance Shell: This fabric provides breathable comfort and durably waterproof and windproof protection. It is used in a two-layer construction for a lighter and softer feel and in three-layer construction for a more heavy-duty alternative.
GORE-TEX® Pro Shell: Engineered with the most rugged, most breathable, durably waterproof and windproof fabrics, three-layer GORE-TEX® Pro Shell with Gore Micro-Grid Backer meets the high demands of hardcore outdoor athletes. Three-Layer GORE-TEX® XCR®: The most durable, waterproof, breathable fabric available, GORE-TEX® XCR® makes it breathable, durable, waterproof, and lightweight.
Two-Layer GORE-TEX® XCR®: The most tested and trusted weather protection you can wear. Windproof, waterproof and breathable, 2-Layer GORE-TEX® XCR® is soft and lightweight, perfect for active pursuits.
Gore Windstopper®: This provides wind protection and allows excess moisture to escape while preventing unwanted moisture from coming back in.
Gore Windstopper® Soft Shell Fabric: Totally windproof, water resistant, and very breathable, Gore Windstopper® Soft Shell garments combine the reliable protection of a shell with the comfort of a mid-layer. These garments keep outdoor enthusiasts comfortable without the need for bulky, restring layers, making them ideal for active pursuits and challenging weather conditions.

DryVent® Alpha: A fabric used in the Summit Series® collection, this burly, waterproof fabric utilizes a microporous, hydrophobic lamination technology that retains its capabilities in even the most severs conditions. Its laminate membrane, consisting of nearly half a million holes per square inch, allows perspiration to pass through the jacket before it condenses to liquid; keeping you dry, warm, and comfortable.
DryVent® DT: Using the same principle as DryVent® coating but reducing the thickness of the third layer, this waterproof fabric is lightweight, packable, and more breathable than other unlined treated fabrics. DryVent® DT is created by applying a polyurethane (PU) coating with a DT print matrix which acts as a dry-touch, half-layer coating. The DT half layer adds durability and comfort by physically separating the DryVent® DT PU coating from the skin. DryVent® DT eliminates the need for a liner and is commonly referred to as a 2.5-layer fabric.
DryVent® 3-Layer Fabric: Utilizing a three-layer construction to stay simultaneously breathable and waterproof in extreme conditions, this fabric excels in any exploration. The durable woven outer layer protects the wearer from abrasion, while the mid-layer utilizes a polyurethane coating and micro pores to channel water vapor from the inner layer to the outer, while keeping water out. The comfortable inner layer is also engineered to manage moisture, channeling it up to the micro pores. The end result is a superior waterproof, breathable technology that stays dry inside and out.
GORE-TEX® is much more durable, has higher waterproof resistance and is generally much more resistant to wear & tear.
Allergic reactions vary from person to person. It can be difficult to establish a cause and effect relationship between the presence of any particular chemical in a product and an allergic reaction, given other environmental factors. In the interest of your health, we cannot recommend a particular item to a customer who already has allergic reactions to chemical products.
DWR is Durable Water Repellency, a way of coating the fabric after a laminate or membrane has been applied to form a protective wall from water droplets on the outer layer.
A chemical treatment, DWR is not waterproof, but does reduce condensation forming, aiding breathability so less moisture reaches your skin.
Fill power is measured by placing one ounce of down in a graduated cylinder and measuring the volume the down occupies in cubic inches. The higher the fill power of the down, the longer the tendrils are, meaning it occupies more space and volume. This means you need less fill to stay warm.
Higher fill powers are also lighter in weight.
In the simplest sense, a waterproof jacket offers the highest level of protection from rain and snow. While a water-resistant jacket offers a good, but lower level of protection. Though there’s a little more to it than that.
The difference between water-resistant and waterproof arises from the fabric. A water-resistant material is so tightly woven that water struggles to get through. So, materials like polyester and nylon naturally withstand more water than cotton just because of their construction. But a water-resistant jacket can only stand up to so much rain.
A waterproof material, on the other hand, provides a complete barrier to water. In this sense a plastic bag is waterproof. But you’d totally overheat if you were hiking or snowboarding in a plastic bag, getting wet from the inside – from your own sweat.
That’s why both our Men's and Women's The North Face waterproof jackets use a membrane material, combining waterproof and breathable properties. This membrane keeps you dry from the inside – yep, from sweat – and from rain and snow on the outside.
There’s another aspect to keeping out the wet we need to talk about, too: water repellence. This basically means that water beads on the surface of a material preventing the fabric from saturating.
We coat many of our products with a durable water repellent (DWR). Together with a tightly-woven, i.e. water-resistant fabric, this provides a good level of protection from rain and snow.
We also apply a DWR to many of our waterproof jackets. But if they’re already great at keeping you dry, why do we do this? Basically, it’s so that the water beads then runs off the surface, rather than saturating it and this helps with maintaining breathability.
So when do you really need a waterproof vs water-resistant jacket? If you want to stay completely dry, inside and out, when active in the rain go for a lightweight waterproof jacket. If you’re only doing light activity and the weather forecast is for light, infrequent showers, then a water-resistant jacket is totally adequate.
